A bed is the smallest lithostratigraphic unit, usually ranging in thickness from a centimeter to several meters and distinguishable from beds above and below it. The thickness of the bed is determined by the time period involving the deposition of the rocks. But bedding may be inclined or have a swirly appearance.


Inclined bedding may occur when sediments are deposited on a slope, such as a sand dune, or when beds are tilted from their original horizontality by forces within the earth. This is a case in geology in which the original depositional layering is tilte and the tilting is not a result of post-depositional deformation. An aside: bedding in sedimentary rocks.


Sedimentary rocks are normally deposited as horizonal layers. Upon closer examination, however, you may see very fine layers (usually to several mm thick) that are at an angle to the main bedding.
