Drainage pattern

Parallel drainage pattern. A parallel drainage system is a pattern of rivers caused by steep slopes with some relief. Because of the steep slopes, the streams are swift and straight, with very few tributaries, and all flow in the same direction.


Drainage pattern is the pattern formed by the streams, rivers, and lakes in a particular drainage basin. They are governed by the topography of the lan whether a particular region is dominated by hard or soft rocks, and the gradient of the land. Distinctive patterns are acquired by stream networks in consequence of adjustment to geologic structure.

Barbed Drainage Pattern : Barbed drainage pattern , a rare kind of drainage pattern , is formed when the tributaries flow in opposite direction to their master streams. The tributaries join their master streams in a hook-shaped bend. Such pattern is generally developed due to river capture (fig 13).


A parallel pattern also develops in regions of parallel, elongate landforms like outcropping resistant rock bands. Tributary streams tend to stretch out in a parallel-like fashion following the slope of the surface.
