Globe valve function

What are some problems with a globe valve? What is the difference between gate valve and globe valve? How do globe valves work? Why use a ball valve vs globe valve?


A globe valve is primarily designed to stop, start and regulate flow. The seat of a globe valve is in the middle of and parallel to the pipe, and the opening in the seat is closed off with a disk or plug.

The purpose of the bypass and the globe valve would depend on the function of the system. The bypass might be used to allow a small amount of flow around the control valve to warm or purge the line prior to startup, or it might be there as a failsafe to prevent inadvertent total shutoff of the line by the control valve. A ball valve is a form of quarter-turn valve which uses a hollow, perforated and pivoting ball to control flow through it. Seats are designed in plane parallel or inclined to the line of the flow. As alluded to in last week’s article, globe valves are a kind of control valve which allow the operator to increase or decrease flow, usually by turning a hand wheel.


Turning the hand wheel rotates the valve’s stem, which raises or lowers a plug into a valve seat. However, each valve doesn’t serve the same function. They’re made with a spherical body and a disc.


The globe valve can be repaired in place while nearly all gate valves need to be removed from the piping system to have leakage problems repaired. If you try to open against a high DP, the seat will score and leak. The disk of a Globe valve can be totally removed from the flowpath or it can completely close the flowpath. The primary difference between Gate Valves, Globe Valves, and Check Valves involves the application and operation of each valve : The gate valve is the most frequently used valve in piping systems.


It is a general service valve that is used primarily for on-off, non-throttling applications. Globe valves are generally used to stop, start, and regulate flow within a pipe. A ball valve functions as a quarter-turn valve , which controls flow through a hollow, perforate and pivoting sphere, hence the name.

It is in the same valve family as butterfly valves and plug valves, which are also quarter-turn valves. The sphere has a port, or a bore, in its center,. Valve Functions and Basic Parts of Valve valve is a mechanical device that controls the flow of fluid and pressure within a system or process.


In the stop check configuration, the stem head floats in the globe disc (i.e., it is not attached) (Figure 1). Stop check valves have two main purposes: 1) as a globe valve , they isolate or regulate flow and 2) modified as a check valve , they prevent reverse flow. These valves are particularly common in on-off services, but can be used for various applications.


Globe Valves can shut off fluid flows by moving the disc against the flow stream.
