Molten metal travels from the electrode via the electrical arc and is deposited into the work piece. Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) is a fusion welding process that uses a consumable, flux-coated electrode to create an arc between the electrode and the work piece. Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) also known as Manual Metal Arc Welding ( MMAW ), is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode (covered with a flux). As the electrode melts , a cover that protects the electrode melts and protects the weld area from oxygen and other atmospheric gases.
