Shallow foundations

What is shallow and deep foundation?

A shallow foundation is a type of building foundation that transfers building loads to the earth very near to the surface, rather than to a subsurface layer or a range of depths as does a deep foundation. The different types of shallow foundation are: Strip footing. Spread or isolated footing. Combined footing Strap or cantilever footing. Types of Shallow Foundation.

This type of shallow foundation is the most common of all types. These footings are formed by combining two or more columns.

This is the most common type of a foundation and used for all small buildings. Following are the types of shallow foundations : 1. Annular Slab or Ring Foundation. Foundation which spreads the load from a wall or column to a greater width is known as spread foundation or footing.

Deep foundations rely both on end bearing and skin friction, with few exceptions like end bearing pile. Shallow foundations transfer loads mostly by end bearing. Construction materials are available, less labor is neede construction procedure is simple at an affordable cost etc.

SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS Foundation design is required for all structures to ensure that the loads imposed on the underlying soil will not cause shear failures or damaging settlements. The two major types of foundations used for transportation structures can be categorized as “shallow” and “deep” foundations. Df=to 4B considered shallow.

The three basic requirements or shallow foundation design criteria are as follows: Placement of the foundation, which involves the depth and location of foundation. Safety against bearing capacity is a requirement that includes suitable proportioning. Every soil settle due to load.

The shallow foundation is also known as a stepped Foundation. If the depth of foundation is less than the width of foundation then it is known as Shallow or stepped Foundation. All other foundations are considered deep foundations.

From design point of view, shallow foundations are classified as follows: Wall footing. Isolated column footing or pad footing. Cantilever or strap footing.

A frost protected shallow foundation (FPSF) is a practical alternative to deeper, more-costly foundations in cold regions with seasonal ground freezing and the potential for frost heave. An FPSF incorporates strategically placed insulation to raise the frost depth around a building, thereby allowing foundation depths as shallow as inches, even in the most severe climates (see comparison graphic ). Frost-protected shallow foundation design can be used effectively with walk-out basements by insulating the foundation on the house’s downhill side, eliminating the need for a stepped footing. FPSF may also be useful in remodeling projects, as it helps minimize site disturbance.
