Mechanical seal types centrifugal pumps

There are various types and arrangement of the mechanical seals being used for the centrifugal pumps. This articles describes some of the commonly used mechanical seal types like Cartridge type mechanical seals , Balanced type , Unbalanced type , Conventional, Pusher, and Non-Pusher type of mechanical seals. Each of these have described below in detail.


Mechanical Seals in Centrifugal Pumps. The mechanical seal acts as a check valve and a slider bearing.

The obvious function is that of a check valve to prevent liquid under pressure from leaking out of the pump , or from drawing air into the pump when under vacuum conditions. Thus the mechanical seals are the devices that form the packing between the rotor and the stationary part of the centrifugal pumps to prevent the leakage of the fluid being pumped by the pump. Today, mechanical seals are the standard in HVAC pumps. The shaft seal is a sealing element which seals the rotating shaft of a centrifugal pump where it passes through the non-rotating pump casing, reducing fluidleakage to atmosphere or the entry of air from outside to a certain level, and keeps wear of the sealing faces as low as possible. As the impeller rotates, its vanes fill with flui then force it out to the pump casing where it exits the pump through the discharge nozzle.


Every centrifugal pump must accommodate a spinning shaft while mechanically maintaining fluid or gas contained in the “wet end” of the pump. WHAT IS A DOUBLE MECHANICAL SEAL ? A double mechanical seal consists of two seals arranged in a series.

The inboar or “primary seal” keeps the product contained within the pump housing. The outboar or “secondary seal” prevents the flush liquid from leaking into the atmosphere. What are the types of mechanical seals?

Basically, centrifugal pumps with mechanical seals have the same function as any other type of pump: it converts mechanical energy into kinetic energy, or the motion energy of a fluid.


Only a part of the mechanical energy gets converted into kinetic energy, though, the rest being transformed into potential energy represented either by fluid pressure or by lifting the fluid at a higher level, thus fighting gravity. The size of the centrifugal pump and the arrangement that differs from manufacturer to manufacturer decides which type of mechanical seals are to be used. Even competitors to BG pumps with old style pump volutes designed with exterior stuffing boxes were retrofitted to accept mechanical seals. When a pump operates, the liquid could leak out of the pump between the rotating shaft and the stationary pump casing.
