What are the types of pump impellers

What is an impeller in a pump? Open impellers have the vanes free on both sides. The vanes are located between the two discs, all in a single casting.

A single-suction impeller allows liquid to enter the center of the blades from only one direction. Impellers can be either single suction or double-suction. Centrifugal and Submersible Pumps have one thing in common, there is no one size or type that fits all applications.

Different impeller and pump body styles are required to do different jobs. The impeller creates velocity and the casing converts velocity into pressure. These two designs are volutes and diffusers. Sta-Rite - DHHG Pump Impeller. There are many different impeller designs.

Impeller design is the most significant factor for determining performance of a centrifugal pump. A properly designed impeller optimizes flow while minimizing turbulence and maximizing efficiency. Impeller types can be radial, mixed flow, axial and peripheral and are selected on the basis of the pump design and the application. The number of vanes will affect the efficiency, in general more vanes are more efficient. Also the number of vanes affect the steepness of the characteristic curve,.

Depending on the flow line pattern in the impeller (especially in the outer impeller diameter area), impellers are subdivided into the following types : Impeller types. Radial impellerSee Figs. Centrifugal pumps are categorized by several factors, including the type and number of impellers , suction, and the output they produce. Thus, it is essential to know the basics to compare types and applications for the best. One must always consider all these factors, however, one thing that people forget to look at is the selecting the right impeller style for your centrifugal pump.

Earlier, impellers generally were divided into two categories open and closed. But these days, there is also a third type available. It is called a semi open impeller. Semi-Closed impellers have a back wall that adds strength to the impeller. Semi-closed impellers are usually used with liquids or products that have solids.

And whether types of pump impellers is multistage pump , gear pump , or diaphragm pump.
