Diaphragm pump how it works

What is the purpose of diaphragm in pump? How to choose a diaphragm pump? Diaphragm Pumps are in the category of positive displacement pumps because their flowrates do not vary much with the discharge head (or pressure) the pump is working against (for a given pump speed).

The air, passing through the opening in the pump casing , reaches the central ring where, through a series of passages between the spool and external ring, it reaches one of the two antechambers (in the figure the path is highlighted in red and the antechamber in blue). The name of the diaphragm pump is derived from the RUBBER MEMBRANE that the pump uses to achieve its pumping action. The membrane is mechanically pushed and pulled in and out of a pumping chamber.

When the diaphragm is collapsed all of the air is forced out of the diaphragm chamber. Diaphragm pumps are deployed in oil and gas exploration activites for pumping crude oil and injecting chemicals at the same time. They possess good suction properties, suitable for corrosive and abrasive substance and capability to discharge pressure equivalent to 2bar. Air operated double diaphragm pumps have good suction lift characteristics and can handle sludges or slurries with a relatively high amount of grit and solid content.

Inside the pump is a diaphragm , or membrane, made of a rubber or plastic material. Depending on your water pump , the diaphragm might use different methods to flex. They use a combination of the reciprocating action of two flexible diaphragms, two inlet and two outlet ball check valves to pump a fluid. Diaphragms flex back and forth to form a chamber of varying volume that in conjunction with inlet and outlet check balls causes the pump to draw in then expel the slurry being pumped. As this disk retracts, liquid is drawn into the opposite chamber through a check valve. When the disk protrudes back into the chamber, volume is displaced pushing the liquid out through a second check valve. Air is driven into the bottom of the air cylinder, raising the piston inside and lifting the diaphragm. As the diaphragm is raise the check valve ball on the intake side is lifted and liquid flows into the pump.


When the piston has risen to the top, the pump cavity is filled and the pump is ready for discharge. A diaphragm pressure gauge is a device that uses a diaphragm with a known pressure to measure pressure in a fluid. It has many different uses, such as monitoring the pressure of a canister of gas, measuring atmospheric pressure, or recording the strength of the vacuum in a vacuum pump. Instead of pistons, however, they have flexible diaphragms.


When an external force is applie the diaphragms compress, forcing air into whatever it is being pumped into. When the force is remove the springy diaphragm expands again, drawing more air in from outside. In most ways, a diaphragm carburetor works exactly like other carburetors but with a unique mechanism for maintaining fuel levels inside the fuel chamber.


Unlike a float chamber carburetor, which uses a simple inlet valve to maintain a constant reservoir of fuel, a diaphragm carburetor sequesters gasoline behind a diaphragm mounted to a needle valve.
