Powder coating process pdf

What are the steps in powder coating? Why is powder coating better than wet painting? What chemicals are in powder coating? The powder coating process is very similar to a painting process except that the “paint” is a dry powder rather than a liquid.

The powder sticks to the parts due to electrostatic charging of the powder and grounding of the parts.

See Figure for a simplified flow sheet of the powder coating material production process ). Weighing, premixing and size reduction of raw materials - Raw materials typically consist of resin, curing agents, pigments, extenders and additives such as flow and degassing aids. The powder used for the process is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, which is sprayed onto a surface to be coated. The aluminum is sent through the drying oven where any moisture from the pretreatment stage is removed. The articles to be coated are first cleaned of all foreign matter from the surface.

Powder coating is a simple process requiring minimal skills and training. Mild steel components need to go through a phosphate conversion coating. Aluminum components go through a chromate conversion coating.

Spray painting vapours and mists, as well as powder paints used in powder coating can spread rapidly, particularly in an enclosed space, and create a potentially explosive atmosphere. A process called electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) is typically used to achieve the application of the powder coating to a metal substrate. This application method uses a spray gun, which applies an electrostatic charge to the powder particles , which are then attracted to the grounded part.

These benefits have enabled powder coatings to take a significant share of the industrial finishing market. The basic principle The elementary idea behind electrostatic powder coating is based on the fact that parts with opposite electrical charges attract each other. The length of time the preheated substrate is introduced to the powder either by dipping or spraying, the thicker the coating will build on the part. After that, the powder was heated to melt and cure. Finally, a smooth bright permanent film on articles was formed to achieve the purpose of decoration and corrosion. There are two methods for the production of powder coatings, such as dry process production and wet process production, as shown in Table 1. Scenario: Powder is supposed to flow like water in the fluid container (boil). Poor fluidization is recognizable in a slow and non-continuous transportation of the powder coating from the fluid container to the guns.

No homogenous powder cloud is achieved. The powder is cured by heating or baking, resulting in a har continuous coating. The powder coat process includes pretreatment, powder application and high-temperature powder curing.

It is a wonderful way to obtain a nice finish on metal that is very durable. This instructable is strictly to show the practical operation of equipment for powder coating.
