Solenoid valve symbol

To indicate which square is active when the solenoid is electrically energize a little actuator symbol is used on both sides. On the left a solenoid symbol is used to show that the left square is the energized state.

The schematic diagram is usually applied to the pneumatic system design and product identifications for pneumatic system designers and solenoid valve users to get a thorough understanding of product functions. Most valve symbols have three parts (see Figure 2A below). The Actuators are the mechanisms which cause the valve to shift from one position to another. The three ports are: inlet (P, 1), outlet (A, 2) exhaust (R, 3) The two states of the valve are open and closed.

When the valve is open, air flows from the inlet (P, 1) to the outlet (A, 2). What does solenoid valve stand for? Does a solenoid valve have flow control? In each switching state, a different port is closed off. More ports and switching states are possible.


For each state of the valve , a single square is drawn. Mechanical actuators would include springs, push buttons, plungers, levers and cam rollers. Most of the time, a small voltage or current is used to switch other voltages or higher currents that may be electromechanical or fully electronic type. In this topic we are talking about how the hydraulic schematic symbol for control valve is derived. The letters used to label ports on a valve such as this not only denote those ports’ destinations, but also serve to mark which “box” of the valve ’s symbol is the normal (resting) state. The spring symbol defines the “at Rest” position ofthe solenoid valve. This symbol indicates that a port is closed and isneither passing or exhausting gas.


The solenoid converts electrical energy into mechanical energy which, in turn, opens or closes the valve mechanically. A direct acting valve has only a small flow circuit, shown within section E of this diagram (this section is mentioned below as a pilot valve ). The symbols above are the different ways a valve can be activated: electrical solenoid , spring, electrical with a hydraulic pilot, hand emergency, proportional solenoid , manual lever, and a foot. Solenoid -controlled valves are often used in irrigation systems, where a relatively weak solenoid opens and closes a small pilot valve , which in turn activates the main valve by applying fluid pressure to a piston or diaphragm that is mechanically coupled to the main valve.
