Types of footings in construction

What are the different types of footing? What is the purpose of foundation in building construction? Which is the best cement for building construction?


Types of Footing – Building Construction Foundation Wall footings. Isolated footing or Single footing.

Combined footings usually support two columns, or three columns not in a row. Cantilever footings or strap footings. The different types of footings used for building construction are described below: 1. The choice of suitable type of footing depends on the depth at which the bearing strata lies, the soil condition and the type of superstructure. It is constructed under each column independently and is usually square, rectangular, or circular in shape.


The thickness of flat isolated footing is uniform. These are used where the building loads are carried by entire walls rather than isolated columns, such as in older buildings made of masonry. It is advisable to know suitability of each types of foundation before their selection in any construction project.

These footings employ only for simple structures. A footing is a part of the foundation that helps support the foundation so that the structure does not settle. It is typically made of concrete with rebar reinforcement. The depth and width of the footing depends on the type of soil and the size and type of the foundation. Spread or isolated or pad footing.


MAT OR RAFT FOUNDATION: 8. Strip or continuous footing. Soil is the root support of the footing. All the forces that come in contact with the footings will be transferred to the soil.


The soil shall bear these loads by the aspect known as bearing capacity. The bearing capacity changes from one type of soil to another and it is the key factor in estimating the size of footings.
