Free chlorine in water

How much chlorine is safe to drink? What is free available chlorine? How do you raise pool water free chlorine?


Chlorine that is added to swimming pools is free chlorine, in that it has not yet bonded with nitrates , ammonia or other compounds in the dirty pool water. This is pure chlorine that is available to disinfect the pool.

These chloramines create the odor most of us associate with chlorine. Water that is absolutely pure will only have free chlorine as there is nothing to combine with. When ammonia or organic nitrogen is also present, chloramines known as monochloramine , dichloramine , and trichloramine will quickly form. Chlorine in water comes in two basic varieties: Free and Combined.

You subtract the amount of free chlorine from the total chlorine to get your combined chlorine level. This figure is what is known as ‘ chlorine demand ‘.
