The story is unique and unpredictable but also comfortingly familiar. Only males are allowed to ascend to chiefdom in a Maori tribe in New Zealand. This ancient custom is upset when the child selected to be the next chief dies at birth.

The Chief's eldest son, Porourangi, fathers twins - a boy and a girl. And he came on the back of a whale. But now we were waiting for the firstborn of the new generation.
