Bearing function

What is the function of a bearing? What causes wheel bearing problems? A bearing is a machine element that constrains relative movement to the desired motion and reduces friction between moving parts. Bearing loading is based on static and dynamic values and the choice of which governs is a function of the operating conditions the bearing will see. They also limit side to side movement along the shaft, such as when cornering hard in a sports car.


In this capacity, they function as thrust bearings. The wheel bearing allows the wheels to rotate with minimal function , and they also support the vehicle’s weight. To be able to do both of these jobs, the bearings must be in near perfect condition.

The seals must also be leak free to keep the lubricant inside the bearings and contaminants out. A bearing – in its simplest form – is a friction reduction device placed within something like a wheel to aid efficiency of rotation. When they fail a growling noise, and a loose hub assembly will occur. A sealed wheel bearing has its seal incorporated into the wheel bearing assembly itself.


They fail and become loose and noisy due to contamination and a lack of lubrication. A thrust bearing is a particular type of rotary bearing. Like other bearings they permit rotation between parts, but they are designed to support a predominantly axial load. Thrust bearings come in several varieties. The function of a ball bearing is to connect two machine members that move relative to one another in such a manner that the frictional resistance to motion is minimal.


In many applications one of the members is a rotating shaft and the other a fixed housing. There are many types of bearings, each used for different purposes. These include ball bearings, roller bearings, ball thrust bearings, roller thrust bearings and tapered roller thrust bearings. Ball bearings, as shown below, are probably the most common type of bearing. Most bearings facilitate the desired motion by minimizing friction.

The thrust bearing consists of Babbitt metal line stationary shoes that run against the rotor thrust runner.

Shoes on both sides of the runner prevent movement in either axial direction. Journal bearing are used to take radial load of the shaft. But it can’t take axial load.


Gas bearings have the lowest friction levels. Friction in hydrodynamic and hydrostatic bearings is a function of lubricant viscosity and shear rate. Shear rate increases with increasing rotational. Resembling wheels, bearings literally enable devices to roll, which reduces the friction between the surfa. There are various type of bearing which are used as per application.


Bearing are manufactured by fabricating cages and manufacturing the elements by casting the balls , cylinders which are made of hardened steel s. The bearing works due to the principle of hydrodynamic lubrication - the rollers, as they roll, squeeze the lubricant to a certain pressure at which point the fluid supports them. In a ball bearing , the load is transmitted from the outer race to the ball, and from the ball to the inner race. Since the ball is a sphere, it only contacts the inner and outer race at a very small point, which helps it spin very smoothly. The shell bearing is used in heavily loaded areas. The bearing shell is spherical, resting in a corresponding spherical seat for ease of alignment.


The bearings are oil-pressure lubricated to maintain an oil film between the shaft and the bearing. The purpose of a roller bearing is to reduce rotational friction and support radial and axial loads. Compared to ball bearings, roller bearings can support heavy radial loads and limited axial loads (parallel to the shaft).
