Water uses

What are the four main uses of water? What is the most important use for water? Which water is suitable for human use? Are you surprised that the largest use of household water is to flush the toilet, and after that, to take showers and baths?


Water can be used for direct and indirect purposes.

Direct purposes include bathing, drinking, and cooking, while examples of indirect purposes are the use of water in processing wood to make paper and in producing steel for automobiles. The bulk of the world’s water use is for agriculture, industry, and electricity. In fact, irrigation is the largest category of water use in the United States, as it is worldwide.


On average in the US , direct indoor water use ( water from the tap, toilet, dishwasher, etc.) adds up to about 1gallons per household per day, or gallons per person per day. Water used in processing foods and beverages must be absolutely clean, while other industries such as a manufacturing plant may use a lower quality of water. It helps maintain blood pressure.
