Valves classification

What are the types of valves? Classification of Valves : Based on functions: Functions of Valves. The design of the valves is done in such way as to perform any of the above functions. The type of valves used can be classified in the following categories.


The control valves are basically classified into two types. As applications become more specific and complicate valves have evolved into nine major types to suit different requirements.

These types cover all industrial applications and services. Valve categorization depends on several considerations. For this article, valves are categorized according to the functions. Linear motion valves used to start and stop flow. The valve is completely opened when the disk is removed from the flow stream.


Majority valve used in piping has a Flanged type ends. Butt welded valves are used in very high pressure and temperature services. Socket Welded valves are used in low-pressure.

Number of ports: most of the valves have two port, named inlet and outlet port. But for same applications there are multi-port configured valves. They can be three-way and four-way valves. Shutoff classifications range from ANSI Class I, where the valve does not require tight shutoff, to ANSI Class VI, where shutoff must be completely or nearly bubble tight.


The following are some of the commonly used valve classifications , based on mechanical motion: Linear Motion Valves. Class Vl is known as a soft seat classification. Soft Seat Valves are those where the seat or shut-off disc or both are made from some kind of resilient material such as Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Intended for resilient seating valves. FLOW CONTROL VALVES TYPES.


General service valves are those valves that are designed for the majority. Special service valves are those valves that are custom engineered. Severe service valves are special. A valve controlling the flow of water through a radiator. Rotary slide valve: A valve in which a rotation of internal parts regulates flow by opening ar closing a series of segmental ports.


Rotary valve: A spherical plug valve in which the plug, which rotates through o. Types of Valves Ball Valve. Ball valve is a quarter turn operated valve. Gate valve is a sliding type of valve.

Similar to ball valves , plug valves are also quarter turn type of valves. Butterfly valves are most simple yet versatile valves. The Single Disc Check Valve (Wafer Type Disc Check Valve) consists of four main components: the body, a disc, a star guide and a spring. The Disc check valves are opened by the pressure of fluid and closed through compression spring as soon as flow stops thus preventing reverse flow. Pinch Valves are used for flow control application, usually to regulate another parameter such as slurry level or thickener underflow solids.


The valve operating principle relies on a flexible section of pipe being flattened between (pinched) two moving bars (like a vice). CLASS IV is also known as metal to metal. It is the kind of leakage rate you can expect from a valve with a metal shut-off disc and metal seat. CLASS Vl is known as a soft seat classification. A globe valve is a linear motion valve used to stop, start, and regulate the fluid flow.


The globe valve disk can be removed entirely from the flow path, or it can completely close the flow path. During opening and closing of globe valve, disc moves perpendicularly to the seat. A valve is a device that regulates, directs or controls the flow of a fluid (gases, liquids, fluidized solids, or slurries) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. Valves are technically fittings, but are usually discussed as a separate category.


In an open valve, fluid flows in a direction from higher pressure to lower pressure. Control valve shutoff classification and allowable leakage rates. Check valve is used to stop back flow in a piping system.


Often when commissioning or troubleshooting automatic control valves, there’s a discovery that the valve, even though fully close doesn’t fully shut off process flow.
