How does chiller work

First of all understand the meaning of chiller. A vapor-compression chiller uses a refrigerant internally as its working fluid. Important parameters to consider are the operating temperatures and pressures. What is a killer chiller? This cool fluid removes heat from the process and the warm fluid returns to the chiller.


Every chiller system contains a refrigerant.

The process starts with a low-pressure refrigerant entering the evaporator. Inside the evaporator, the refrigerant is heate causing it to undergo a phase change into a gas. A chiller is a machine that removes heat from a liquid via a vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycle. This liquid can then be circulated through a heat exchanger to cool equipment, or another process stream.


As a necessary by-product, refrigeration creates waste heat that must be exhausted to ambience, or for greater efficiency, recovered for heating purposes. They both have an evaporator, compressor, condenser and an expansion valve. The main difference is that one uses air to fuel condenser cooling and the other uses water.
