Welding Handbook Welding and Related Processes for Repair and Maintenance Onboard 14th edition 2nd revision Notice: All welding is carried out on the welder’s own risk and account. Welding should be executed by a qualified and experienced welder and adequate safety measures should always be adhered to. Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), or tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding , is a manual welding process that uses a nonconsumable tungsten electrode, an inert or semi-inert gas mixture, and a separate filler material. A weld is made when separate pieces of material to be joined combine and form one piece when heated to a temperature high enough to cause softening or melting. Filler material is typically added to strengthen the joint.

The slag is removed by tapping the weld with a chipping hammer or chisel and cleaned off with a wire brush. Machine welding can be defined as mechanized welding with equipment that performs the operation under the continuous supervision of an operator. It is normally accomplished by a welding head that is moved by mechanical means relative to a stationary work, or by moving the work relative to a stationary welding head. The manual addresses general considerations for welding , welder certification and inspection procedures.

How does a TIG welder work and when to TIG weld? Welders are designed for certain applications, depending on rated output, duty cycle and other features. The basic arc welding circuit is an alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) power source connected by a “work” cable to the work piece and by a “hot” cable to an electrode. Welding is the strongest method for bonding metal to metal.

When the electrode is positioned close to the work piece, an arc is created across the gap between the metal and the hot cable electrode. When two parts to be joined are melted together, heat or pressure or both is applied and with or without added metal for formation of metallic bond. WELDING TERMS Terms commonly used in gas shielded welding arc length Distance between the tip of the electrode and the surface of the weld pool. Incorrectly used to describe the metal from which the components of the joint are made. The correct term is parent metal.

A single run of weld metal deposited onto the surface of the parent metal. Welding commences when an electric arc is struck by making contact between the tip of the electrode and the work. The intense heat of the arc melts the tip of the electrode and the surface of the work close to the arc. The arc is struck between the workpiece and the tip of the electrode.

Welding and Metal Fabrication Book pdf Welding and Metal Fabrication is designed to help you develop all of the skills to become a highly paid versatile welder. In addition, it is designed to make the process of learning to weld interesting and rewarding by having everything you weld on becoming something you can take home and use. Welding defects are generated in a welding job due to the faulty or poor technique used by the inexperienced or unskilled welder or due to fundamental difficulties in the welding operation. An ideal weld or good weld should be such that adequate fusion exists between the filler metal and edge preparation together with good penetration.

Metal transfer occurs during the high energy peak level in the form of a single molten droplet.
