Desalination plant process

How long does it take to build a desalination plant? What are the drawbacks of the desalination plant? How does desalination came to the rescue in Israel? Why is desalination plant so expensive?

Membrane Distillation (MD) is a water desalination membrane process currently in limited commercial use.

MD is a hybrid process of RO and distillation in which a hydrophobic synthetic membrane is used to permit the flow of water vapor through the membrane pores, but not the solution itself. The leading process for desalination in terms of installed capacity and yearly growth is reverse osmosis (RO). The RO membrane processes use semipermeable membranes and applied pressure (on the membrane feed side) to preferentially induce water permeation through the membrane while rejecting salts.

In ancient times, many civilizations used this process on their ships to convert sea water into drinking water. Today, desalination plants are used to convert sea water to drinking water on ships and in many arid regions of the worl and to treat water in other areas that is fouled by natural and unnatural contaminants. From a massive plant planned for Carlsbad in the southern part of the state, all the way up to Monterey County in the bay area,. All type of water can be produced from a desalination plant : WHO or EU drinking water.

Process water : boiler feed water, cooling water.

Demi or Ultrapure water. The desalination plant is located next to Tampa Electric’s (TECO) Big Bend Power Station, which already withdraws and discharges up to 1. Tampa Bay, using it as cooling water for the power plant. For example, higher quality geothermal energy can be used to produce power, followed by desalination using both thermal and membrane processes, then for applications in food processing, refrigeration plants and district heating or cooling systems, heating of building spaces, greenhouses and soil heating, industrial process heat and agricultural drying, and fish farming. Scientists are studying ways to use desalination on a global scale, but you can desalinate water yourself with just a mug, a bowl, and some sunlight.

With improvements in technology, desalination processes are becoming cost-competitive with other methods of producing usable water for our growing needs. There are several steps to this process. Seawater is drawn in from the Tasman Sea via an underground and undersea tunnel. Desalination can be defined as any process that removes salts from water.

Seawater enters the plant through screens that filter out larger material. Pre-treatment filters remove smaller particles. Water Treatment Solutions. Before entering the seawater reverse osmosis membranes, clarified seawater is pressurized by the High Pressure Pump typically between and bars, depending on the temperature and the salinity of the water.

How the Plant Works Pretreatment Before the RO process , seawater entering the desalination plant flows. High pressure forces the pretreated water. Reverse Osmosis Next is the RO process.

Post-treatment, Blending and Delivery After the RO process , chemicals are added to stabilize.

On a Mediterranean beach miles south of Tel Aviv, Israel, a vast new industrial facility hums around the clock. It is the world’s largest modern seawater desalination plant, providing percent of the water consumed by the country’s households.
