Alarm check valve function

An alarm check valve can be activated (or opened) in one of two basic ways: either manually when a person activates a water gong, or electronically. Once the alarm check valves are activate they will allow water to flow through the system, engaging the sprinkler system as and where needed in order to suppress a potential fire. Alarm Valve is a double seated clapper check valve with grooved seat design, which ensures positive water flow for alarm operation and is designed for installation in wet pipe sprinkler system. External bypass prevents false alarm under all supply pressure condition.


The main purpose of the alarm check valve is to ring a mechanical bell called a water motor gong. The valve shoul (if properly maintained), help hold the system pressure steady and reduce the possibility of false alarms. This is accomplished by providing a one way ( check ) valve that is closed when the water pressure on the fire sprinkler side of the valve exceeds the water supply pressure.


The TYCO Model AV-1-3Alarm Check Valves are divided seat ring, rubber-faced clapper, waterflow alarm check valves that are intended for use in wet pipe (automatic sprinkler) fire protection systems. The Viking Model J-Alarm Check Valve serves as a check valve by trapping pressurized water above the clapper and preventing reverse flow from sprinkler piping. Alarm valve prevents a reverse flow of water or air pressure from the installation into the fire-pump room. In case a fire sprinkler is activated (opened) due to fire, the alarm valve will open and permit water flow into the system and a pressure switch gives a signal to activate the fire-pump.
