Pelton wheel turbine pdf

Design of Pelton turbines. When to use a Pelton turbine. Because water and most liquids are nearly incompressible, almost all of the available energy is extracted in the first stage of the hydraulic turbine. The water turbines converts the energy possesed by the water to mechanical energy.

THEORY In the impulse turbines , the total head available is first converted into the kinetic energy.

This is usually accomplished in one or more nozzles. A Pelton - wheel impulse turbine is a hydro mechanical energy conversion device which converts gravitational energy of elevated water into mechanical work. A performance test was conducted for a pelton wheel turbine with the ob jective of establishing the relationship between the mechanical efficiency and the v elocity ratio. The main advantages are that In this turbine , the whole process of water jet striking and leaving for the runner takes place at atmospheric pressure.

Pelton wheel turbines , both first law and the second law of motion are applied. Can a pelton wheel turbine used for low head? The targets on the rotating wheel are known as buckets, and the assembly of the wheel and buckets is called the runner.

Theoretically a Pelton Wheel turbine is most efficient when the speed of its buckets is half the speed of its water jet.

Impulse turbines are ideally suited for high head and relatively low power. The Pelton turbine used in this experiment is an impulse turbine. The runner consists of multiple buckets mounted on a rotating wheel.

In this video we will see the operating principle and the design aspects of the Pelton turbine. Further, it is preferred at a very high head and low discharges with low specific speeds. Pelton turbine is one such power source which develops electricity by converting kinetic energy of water into mechanical energy.

IT is a hydraulic turbine which is used in most of the hydroelectric power plant to generate electricity. Turgo turbine is an impulsive water turbine and handles flow rates more than the flow rates of Pelton turbine handles. The main difference between a Pelton turbine and a Turgo turbine is that Turgo turbines use single cups instead of double cups on the wheel , and these cups are more shallow. Pelton Turbine bucket and check its suitability for the the pelton turbine. PELTON WHEEL TURBINE LAB PURPOSE: The main purpose of this lab is to measure the power output of a Pelton Wheel turbine and to compare this to the theoretical power output.

Another purpose of the lab is to check turbine scaling laws. PROCEDURE: Set the driving pressure at a low level. Measure the flow rate through the turbine.

The force produced by the jet impact at right angles to the buckets generates a torque that causes the wheel to rotate, thus producing power. Diameter of the wheel (D) 2. Size (i.e. width and depth) of the buckets 4.

Power to be developed 3. On the conventional Pelton - wheel is such that it consumes jet water at P1. The weight of this stored Water per second in the bucket-cup is the amount of potential energy per second from water jet. Learn more about design, analysis, working principle and applications of Pelton Wheel Turbine. Hydraulic Turbines are being used from very ancient times to harness the energy stored in flowing streams, rivers and lakes. The oldest and the simplest form of a Hydraulic Turbine was the Waterwheel used for grinding grains.

Theory A pelton wheel is a tangential impulse turbine , and water strikes its buckets as a free jet( atmospheric pressure) with a high velocity.
