Electrical potential difference is the difference in the amount of potential energy a particle has due to its position between two locations in an electric field. This important concept provides the basis for understanding electric circuits. Voltage is just the potential difference between two points in a circuit. A potential difference in a circuit merely means that work is done on electrons by an electric field as they pass through the circuit and their potential energy changes.
