Gas metal arc welding

The process uses shielding from an externally supplied gas to protect the molten weld pool.

An external shielding gas is used to protect the molten weld puddle. The electrode used in gas metal arc welding is also the filler metal consumable. Gas metal arc welding ( GMAW ) is a fusion welding process, which uses an electrical arc as the source of energy that causes the metal fusion to occur.


GMAW can be implemented as a manual, semi-automatic, or automatic process, and the flexibility offered by the various process variations is advantageous in many applications. Gas Tungsten Arc welding – (GTAW or TIG welding ) In this process, a tungsten electrode is used along with shielding gas to heat the filler metal that is placed closely on top of the base metals and an arc created due to the power supply welds the joints, while the gas protects the weld. In gas welding , fuel gases like acetylene, hydrogen are used to generate heat. The basic operation of the GMAW process occurs when an electrical arc is established and maintained between a base material and a continuously feed wire electrode.

An electric arc is created between the tip of the wire and the weld pool. Shielding gas protects the weld from atmospheric contamination. MIG or (GMAW) is one of the most popular welding processes. In this process, consumable electrode is used in the form of wire and a shielding gas such as Argon, Helium, Carbon dioxide or a mixture of these gases are used.


These gases shield the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination. As initially this process was used mainly for welding aluminium and stainless steels with inert gas shielding it is more popularly known as metal inert gas (MIG) welding.
