The basic types of automatic initiating devices are those that detect heat, smoke, flame, and water flow. The two categories of heat detectors are fixed temperature and rate of rise. Devices that are a combination of these basic types are also available.

Vertex detectors have become critical components of modern detectors. These systems rely on silicon sensors with – µm position resolution at radii of ~ cm. The high density of detector elements requires highly integrated readout electronics , monolithically integrated on silicon chips. Smoke and fire detection equipment is an integral part of any building’s safety. When working properly, they alert the occupants in a building of a fire before it spreads, giving them enough time to evacuate.


This type of equipment comes in many forms: heat detectors , smoke detectors , flame detectors , and CO gas detectors. The radiation passes through an ionization chamber which is an air-filled space between two electrodes. There are various types of RI detectors which include, the Christiansen effect detector, interferometer detector, thermal lens detector and the dielectric constant detector. They have limited sensitivity and detection depends on the changes in refractive index of eluting molecules in the mobile phase.


These detectors are used for detecting non-ionic compounds that neither fluoresce nor absorb in the UV region.
