Deionized water vs distilled water

Can I drink deionized water? How to make deionized water? What are the dangers of drinking distilled water? Usually, a mixed ion exchange bed with both positive and negative charged resins is used.


However, the method has a different set of drawbacks. For example, the process does little or nothing about any non-polar salts that may be in the solution.

Furthermore, distilled water requires a change of phase from vapor to liquid and back to liquid and no mixture with chemicals whereas deionized water requires a mixture with chemicals but no change of phase. In some cases, the requirement may go beyond the choice between deionized water vs distilled water as applications may require the use of “ultrapure” water. Demineralized , deionized , and distilled water share in that they are all types of purified water , meaning that they have undergone some treatment process to remove impurities and make the treated water suitable for a given use.


Rain is actually water that’s been distilled. A hot day’s sun causes water on the Earth’s surface to evaporate, creating a vapor. Those vapors rise, they become clouds, and when the temperature cools, the clouds release the vapor in the form of rain. The deionized water has mineral ions removed and distilled water is distilled at high temperatures leaving most contaminants behind.


The minerals like magnesium, calcium, iron and others that cause water spots (negative ions) are exchanged for positively charged ions (like hydrogen).

The main difference between distilled water and deionized water is that distilled water is produced by boiling followed by condensation whereas deionized water is produced using ion exchange resins. It is usually produced using groundwater or tap water. Through purification, many types of impurities are remove including (1): Bacteria. Metals like copper and lead.

It had resistivity nearly equal to Megaohm-cm. This is important because water at this extreme purity level degrades quickly. The nuclear grade deionization resin or polishing mixed bed resin removes almost all the inorganic contaminants in the water increasing the resistivity of the water to a maximum of 18.


Which water should you use in your cosmetic lab? When we take all factors into account, distilled water has the highest quality for a cosmetic lab but distilled water is not always achievable and affordable. As an alternative, you can use deionized or RO water in your cosmetic lab.


Best practise is to use freshly boiled water in your cosmetic lab. Both are types of “purified” water but are produced in very different ways. As discusse deionized water is produced by passing water over beds of electrostatically charged resins.

Distilled or Deionized Water ? There are some people that say that it may be messing up the lamps. While deionization removes most of the minerals and other inorganic ions, it does not affect organic substances or microbes. DI water working in conjunction with an RO system is what gives the potential of DI water to be cleaner than distilled water. I was doing a little research on distilled water verses ionized water , and I found some pretty interesting things.


Deionized water can be used for anything that traditionally required the use of distilled water. I have a few friends who insist on drinking distilled water because their rationale is: it does not have any chemicals in it and it is pure water , so it obviously is “good for you”. The presence of foreign ions commonly found in tap water will drastically shorten the lifespan of a lead-acid battery.
