Motor operated valve basics

Motor operated valves are typically used in process plants as on-off valves. So instead of fluid flow control, they simply turn the flow of process fluid on or off, with the help of a electrical motor. Check out the different types of motor operated valves and their applications here.

These valves are generally large and are used for different applications such as pump discharge, etc. This means that the hardware or welds are considered pressure boundary parts.

Inmost valves , the bonnet also houses the packing or seal around the stem, preventing leakage. Also known as an “electric actuator”, motor operators come in a wide variety of sizes and. As actuated valves are often part of valve interlocked operating procedures, Alcatraz Interlocks has designs for different systems. The IMS (Interlocks MOV System) is a mechanical interlocking system for Electrical actuators. The basic pneumatic valve is a mechanical device consisting of a body and a moving part (poppet or stem), which connects or disconnects passages within the body.

Local valve position indication refers to some visually discernable characteristic of the valve that indicates valve position. Rising stem valve position is indicated by the stem position. Nonrising stem valves sometimes have small mechanical pointers that are operated by the valve actuator simultaneously with valve operation.

Globe and gate valves are opened and closed in this way. Hand-operated , quarter turn valves , such as Ball, Plug or Butterfly, has a lever for actuate the valve. Manually operated valves require someone in attendance to adjust them using a direct or geared mechanism attached to the valve stem.

Power-operated actuators, using gas pressure, hydraulic pressure or electricity, allow a valve to be adjusted remotely, or allow rapid operation of large valves. Power-operated valve actuators may be the final elements of an automatic control loop which automatically regulates some flow, level or other process. Motor Operated Valve (MOV) is one of the most important items in process and piping system. A control valve is a power operated device capable of modulating flow at varying degrees between minimal flow and full capacity in response to a signal from the controlling system. What is a circuit control valve?

Circuit control valves are used to control flow volumes and pressures within a system. The valve stem provides the necessary movement to the disc, plug or the ball for opening or closing the valve , and is responsible for the proper positioning of the disk. It is connected to the valve handwheel, actuator, or the lever at one end and on the other side to the valve disc.

Valworx motor operated valves use an electric motor driven gear box to open and close the valve. This is a draft motor operated valve inspection and test plan. As with the manually operated gate valve , the gate or blade is sealed.

A manual override lever allows the technician to observe the position of the valve or manually position it. Valve operators are the parts that apply force to shift a valve’s flow-directing elements, such as spools, poppets, and plungers. The sequence, timing, and frequency of valve shifting is a key factor in fluid power system performance.

Usually, an electrically activated solenoid shifts the valve spool or poppet to direct flow. The valve provides an easy on-off function, which many systems use to interlock, isolate, and connect. There are two basic types of electric valve actuators: rotary and linear.

Each type of actuator uses special valves. Rotary electric valve actuators are used with ball, plug, and butterfly valves that rotate a quarter-turn or more from open to close. The simplest hydraulic circuit consists of a reservoir, pump, relief valve , 3-way directional control valve , single acting cylinder, connectors and lines. This system is used where the cylinder piston is returned by mechanical force. With the control valve in neutral, pump flow passes through the valve and back to the reservoir.

EEVs control the flow of refrigerant entering a direct expansion evaporator. They do this in response to signals sent to them by an electronic controller. A small motor is used to open and close the valve port.

The valve features a stepper motor as the actuator. The motor is called a step or stepper motor.
